Committed to Seeing our Community Prosper
James Michael Hernandez, was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1985 to a broken home. His mother was a part-time receptionist for local doctor’s office and his father was a used car salesman for a local dealership. At an early age, his parents separated, leaving his mother to care and support him and his sister on her own. James remembers moving to a local women's shelter, now known as the Purple Door. With hardships and financial struggles, they often found themselves homeless. They were fortunate, on occasion, to find a place to stay with family.
“Some of my earliest memories were that of living in Wiggins a government housing complex on 19th Street”, says James
After a few years of living with his mother, James decided to live with his father in the Dona Park neighborhood on the city's Northside. As a teenager, he lived with his disabled grandparents to help care for them and continues to this day caring for his grandmother. “It was the help and guidance of my grandfather, when he was alive, that helped me get on the right path,” he states. His grandfather was a Korean War veteran and a long time industrial worker, who helped him see that education and trade school was important.
James attended Moody High School, where he began taking courses in welding and electrical trade programs. James set his goal on becoming an electrician. So he registered and started his new career path at the Craft Training Center of the Coastal Bend where he received his NCCER+ certification for electrical training. After completing the program he passed the Journeyman Electrician Exam for the State of Texas.
Shortly after passing the state exam James Hernandez, with much enthusiasm, started his new business Landmark Electric Company as a Master Electrician. He has successfully been operating in the Corpus Christi and surrounding Coastal Bend Area for almost 10 years. James knows how hard he must work, as a small business owner and has endured some tough times.
In 2018, James run for Mayor of Corpus Christi, and campaigned on desalinization, reducing bond debt and infrastructure needs. “While I did not win the election it helped me become a better supporter of my city's needs. Since then I have served on the Westside Business Association Board of Directors and Chair of the Electrical Advisory Board. I continue to support and have active memberships in the NAACP, United Chamber of Corpus Christi and Westside Business Association.”
James is a Republican because of his experiences he learned and instilled with great values from his grandfather, to work hard, continue to educate yourself, and help others.
As a candidate for Texas State Representative, District 34, Hernandez has overcome adversity and truly understands the meaning of hard work through life experiences. He is committed to strong family values and has a vision of seeing our community prosper. James has a vision and dreams of helping his community and now wanting to help other small business owners prosper.
